When it comes to fashion, it’s not enough to only support BIPoC-owned brands & businesses, we also have to stop giving our money / supporting brands & designers who clearly don’t stick to their promises, their words, who never supported BIPoC to begin with and who still fail to do so (we see you, Celine posting a statement on your all-white grid, D&G who has been trash for so long). This is just not about posting one statement on IG, this is about working with creatives / models / photographers / PR / managers / graphic designers of Color. It’s about hiring BIPoC, promoting them to higher positions, giving them a raise like white people are getting a raise. On my part, I am going to look further into brands & fashion houses (what have they done or not done in the past, what are they doing now, what are they going to do in the future?), call them out and stop giving them my money – these are all things I should have done before and I am ashamed and sorry that I never did pay enough attention to it because I had/have the privilege to not properly educate myself on it. It’s just not acceptable (never was) to work in fashion, to love fashion without properly informing myself about how brands & fashion houses act and who they choose to work with. On another note: I have been learning a lot from @pam_boy and if you are not following him already, go and do it now (not only for his knowledge on current events but also for his work as a writer, his view on fashion – that said, we also need to be seeing more BIPoC working at fashion & lifestyle magazines!).

I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO is a journey into black history that connects the past of the Civil Rights movement to the present of Black Lives Matter.“ There are many lists (easy to find) out there on which you can find many more educational documentaries, movies and series we should watch to understand that we’ll never understand. #jamesbaldwin
