Das ist mal ein ganz anderes Buch auf meinem Nachttisch als sonst, eines, das Sachbuch und Biographie und vergnügliche Prosa zugleich ist, ein unterhaltsamer, lehrreicher Mischmasch, ein Werk, das uns in eine in vielerlei Hinsicht ferne Welt und Zeit entführt, in eine Gesellschaft, die schillert und Kunst atmet, nach Venedig, in die Gefühls- und Lebenswelt von Peggy Guggenheim, Luisa Casati und Doris Castlerosse, die allesamt im Palazzo am Canal Grande lebten und liebten und offenbar ebenso wundersam wie faszinierend waren. Meine Lieblingsbuchhändlerin empfahl es mir, woraufhin ich es gleich mehrmals kaufte, für meine Tante etwa, die ich beim Lesen in Gedanken mehrmals neben mir sitzen hatte, glucksend und staunend und knurrend, ob dieser eigensinnigen Frauen, die manchmal kaum wahr sein können, es aber dennoch waren, ja sind.
