Mai ist nicht nur der Wonnemonat, sondern auch der Monat, in dem viele der sogenannten Commencement Speeches gehalten werden: Reden, gerne von Promis, vor frischgebackenen College-Absolvent*innen. Eine gute Gelegenheit, sich inspirieren zu lassen – zum Beispiel von Shonda Rhimes und J. K. Rowling.
Als ich im Dezember 2012 mein deutsch-französisches Doppeldiplom in Empfang nahm, wurden zwar ein paar Reden geschwungen – so richtig einfallsreich waren die aber nicht. Immerhin wurde uns Neu-Diplomierten nicht ernsthaft prophezeit, mit einem Diplom à la IEP Lille (meine Universität) würde sich quasi automatisch ein Topjob finden. So geschehen bei einer Freundin, die ihr Diplom zwei Jahre früher machte als ich und sich noch heute mit Schaudern an diesen Moment universitärer Überheblichkeit erinnert. Statt Jobgarantien gab es bei uns nur Regenschirme, auf denen der Name unseres Jahrgangs, George Orwell, abgedruckt war. Im Nachhinein eine erstaunlich treffende Wahl, denn wer würde besser zum modernen Dasein zwischen Alternative Facts, Fake News und Comeback der Diktatur passen als der Autor des dystopischen Romans 1984?
In den USA (und Großbritannien) ist der College-Abschluss eine sehr viel festlichere Angelegenheit: flatternde Roben, fliegende Hüte und, wenn man die entsprechende Elite-Einrichtung besucht, inspirierende Reden von Berühmtheiten. Commencement speeches nennen diese Reden sich und sollen den Absolvent*innen weise Worte mit auf ihren künftigen Lebensweg geben. Das Gute ist: Man musst selbst keinen Abschluss an einem amerikanischen College machen, um sich inspirieren zu lassen. Hier sind fünf Reden von fünf Frauen, die handfeste Lebensweisheiten bieten.
